It is an opportunity for CASE to applaud and promote the creative and difficult work of our top educational executives. Donald R. Eastman III, Ph.D

Donald Eastman is the current President of CASE District III’s Eckerd College. Dr. Eastman graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Tennessee. He studied abroad at The School of Irish Studies in Dublin, Ireland and continued his education at University of Florida, earning a Ph.D. with a concentration in Modern and Nineteenth-Century British and Irish Literature. After completing his degree, Dr. Eastman taught English Literature at University of Florida. In 1975, Dr. Eastman returned to University of Tennessee to teach and serve as Executive Assistant to the Chancellor and Executive Director to University Communications. Dr. Eastman traveled abroad in 1989 to teach English Literature at Lanzhou University in Lanzhou, China. From 1990-2001 Dr. Eastman served as the Vice President for Development and University Relations and eventually served as Vice President for Strategic Planning and Public Affairs at the University of Georgia. In 2001, Dr. Eastman was named President of Eckerd College where upon taking the seat as President, Dr. Eastman defined the five essential values of Eckerd College: residential, global, spiritual, environmental, and personal. In his eight years as President, he has worked to exemplify each of the five essential values formulating revolutionary changes at Eckerd College. Under his leadership, the College Board of Trustees has increased its alumni representation and has elevated Eckerd’s standing in the higher education world. In 2003, the college was named one of 13 “Institutions of Excellence in the First College Year” and awarded a Phi Beta Kappa chapter. In 2004, President Eastman proposed a 10-year strategic plan, which was unanimously approved by the faculty and Board of Trustees. Since 2001, through his guidance, the College has seen more than $50 million in new construction and improvement across the campus resulting in an increase in enrollment and retention. Recently, the college was named as one of PC Magazine’s 2008 Top 20 Wired Colleges. While at Eckerd College, Dr. Eastman has written several articles for the St. Petersburg Times and currently serves as a member in the Association of Governing Boards (AGB) Council of Presidents and Ex Officio member of The Florida Council of 100. CASE III is proud to honor Dr. Donald R. Eastman’s accomplishments and leadership within our district with this year’s Chief Executive Leadership Award.
