Key Decision Makers Pre-Conference Forum

Advancement decision makers face unique challenges, especially in the current economy. This intense, highly collaborative pre-conference workshop engages advancement leaders at colleges, universities, community colleges or independent schools, inspiring new approaches and and exchanging ideas that work. The daylong workshop is set for Sunday, but registration includes a kick-off "sunset" reception with presidents and heads of schools on Saturday evening.

"Gen Y Impact on Advancement: Managing a 4-Generation Workplace and Connecting the Generation"
The current-day reality of four generations in the workplace has major implications for recruiting, developing and retaining staff. Office interactions across generational lines -- official and unofficial -- are more complex; and expectations of what is needed, required, and expected vary widely between various generations of workers. Jason Dorsey will enlighten and forearm attendees with knowledge and ideas on how to manage a multi-generational staff.

8:45-10:30 – Leading Where It Counts
Research indicates there are 9 leadership behaviors that individuals use in their leadership styles and that lay the foundation for extraordinary success. These behaviors center around vision, story, listening, empathy, values, institutional ego, and risk taking. In this session we'll explore these behaviors and discuss leadership in fundraising and beyond. We'll take an in depth look at leaders in higher education and what leadership skills that use to be successful in moving institutions of higher learning forward. A focus on leaders such as Rita Bornstein, President Emeritus, Rollins University; Freeman Hrabowski, President of University of Maryland, Baltimore County; John Casteen, President of University of Virginia; and Gordon Gee, President of Ohio State University will provide a framework for reviewing concepts on transactional leadership, transformational leadership, and transformative leadership.
